Recommendations from Waterfox
Please update your version of Waterfox for the latest features and security updates. You may have noticed that Waterfox occasionally recommends features and extensions to you while you browse, and that these recommendations may be specific to the particular website you are on at the time or relevant to your current task.
That’s because Waterfox might suggest extensions based on websites you visit or recommend features based on ways you engage with the browser, such as bookmarking a page or visiting a recipe, news website or PDF file. These recommendations are intended to help you browse better and complete tasks more efficiently.
Waterfox does not receive a copy of your browser history or share your data with third party sites to make these recommendations. The entire process of identifying browsing patterns and matching appropriate features or extensions takes place locally, in your copy of Waterfox. All extensions recommended to you have been vetted through the Recommended Extensions program.
Why is this specific feature or extension being recommended to me?
Waterfox might occasionally recommend features or extensions as you browse. Recommendations are intended to introduce you to new or existing noteworthy tools that will improve your experience.
We designed this recommendation system to preserve your privacy. We recommend a feature or extension based on how often you visit a website, and we make the recommendation while you’re visiting the site. However, the website is unaware of the recommendation and neither Waterfox nor Waterfox receives or shares data about your browsing history with any third party sites or the website you are visiting.
When Waterfox recommends a feature and extension for a website you visit, you’ll see a Recommendation button in the address bar. When you click the address bar button you can view the recommendation, add the extension or try the feature, and learn more:
What kinds of features and extensions do you recommend?
Waterfox may recommend a variety of features, including browser tools and extensions.
Browser tools are discrete tools built directly into the browser, like Pin Tabs. Waterfox contains a lot of different tools that can improve your browsing experience and workflows through customization and efficiency gains. The recommendation feature aims to expose you to tools you may not be aware of but could find useful.
Extensions allow you to add features to Waterfox to customize your browsing experience. Extensions are software programs, most often developed by a third party, that modify the way Waterfox works. They’re like apps for the browser, and they can make the tasks you do online simpler and more efficient. Extensions do things like protect passwords, download videos, find deals, block annoying ads, and much more. Empowering users to customize their browsing experience to fit their needs, as well as their personal tastes, is an important part of Waterfox.
How are features and extensions selected?
Features and extensions are selected for recommendation through a thorough review process. All recommendations are exceptional tools or extensions that are hand-selected by Waterfox’s product and editorial teams based upon functionality, user experience, and security.
Extension developers may be third party developers. They cannot pay for placement in the recommendation program, and Waterfox does not receive any compensation as a result of this process. Recommendations are strictly intended to provide a better browsing experience for you.
Who benefits from these recommendations?
Ideally, Waterfox users like you will benefit. Recommendations are strictly intended to provide a better browsing experience. We believe that the recommended features and extensions offer unique value, making the browser even more personal and useful.
